Created by Olszewski for his Special Release series produced by Goebel Miniatures
This medallion was first carved for author Dick Hunt and collectible dealer Paul Stark for his excellent book, Limited Edition Collectibles, Everything You May Ever Need to Know. Olszewski was one of a dozen prominent artists who were asked to produce a self-portrait for the book, as well as a history of their works. Some painted in oils, some in water colors, and others in whatever was their speciality. Olszewski carved his into a square bronze sculpture, as a symbol of the studio, and placed his two children on the casting as a symbol of his love. Since the studio already had the artwork, it was decided to strike a medallion for sale. The dies were cast in a round shape and the medallions struck at a mint, using a large press. The medallion was first introduced at the Hummel festival in Eaton, Ohio, in June 1988. This first issue was a limited edition of 500 with the words "Bavarian Summer Festival '88, Eaton, Ohio." Other version that were struck include dealers Country Cousin (Betty and Ray Olszewski's store in Northern Virginia) and Dick Hunt's retail. Others had a plain back, which is the listed on our store for sale. Olszewski remarks in Dick Hunt's book "when personal appearances are made,, special things happen." The medallion carries the design mark of 955-B, issued in 1988 and 1989, and priced at $35.00.
