Butterfly Collection The Chippendale Breakfront
SKU: OM201-MO
As a cabinetmaker Chippendale achieved the fullest expression of his art in great architectural case pieces such as this massive storage and display unit, which he identified as a library bookcase. The pattern appears on the right-hand side of plate number LXXXVIII in the Director, dated 1760 and published two years later in the third edition. The doors of the upper section are glazed with the panes held in place by naturalistic scrolling tracery that retains just a hint of its Gothic origins. The outline of the glazing bars is repeated in the moldings applied to the faces of the drawers and cupboard doors below. As Chippendale recommended, the lower portion projects a few inches more than the upper part. In this variation two drawers have taken the place of the cabinet space in the central section. In other versions a writing area similar to that in a secretary desk was sometimes provided. The four shelves were intended for the display of fine leather-bound books, objects of art, or other precious articles. The scallop shell motif on the crest of the pediment recalls the French rocaille antecedents of the Chippendale style.
