Butterfly Collection Queen Anne Bookcase

This monumental bookcase dates from about 1710, toward the end of the reign of Queen Anne. An upper section with three deep shelves rises above a cabinet base. Double glazed doors of six panes each cover the upper portion, while the lower section is protected by solid doors. The whole rests on shaped bracket feet and is topped by a severe but slightly curved cornice. Apart from the simple brass hardware, the only decoration is provided by the slight pattern in the grain. Case pieces of this type dominated by libraries of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and protected the valuable leatherbound volumes from dirt and theft behind locked doors.
