Butterfly Collection Baroque Picture Frame

Paintings during the Stuart period were hung in elaborate baroque frames of Italiante inspiration. They were carved in wood with heavy scrolling or foliage designs, covered with a thin coat of gesso (a fine white composition resembling plaster), coated with red bole and gilded with pure gold leaft burnished to a soft luster. This example has the correct proportions for the standard English portrait size of 25 by 30 inches. Most paintings in the homes of this period were portraits, although still lifes and landscapes were not uncommon. Listed in the 1 July 1979 price list, the Baroque Picture frame shown retailed for$10.00. Today, it is being sold for $50.00. Only one left.
